I once heard someone say that being able to sing is a gift you are either born with or you are not. This implied that anyone who doesn’t spring out of the womb singing like Mariah Carey should just give up. Such nonsense! With the right training anyone can learn how to sing and bring out the uniqueness of their voice.

If you are considering hiring a vocal coach then depending on your current ability you may have to spend a thousand dollars or more which may be a little expensive for most people. Most vocal coaches teach you things you dont really need to know because you don’t probably don’t want to be an opera singer.

It is a fact that the majority of vocal coaches are failed professionals who have suffered for their art without success. They want to teach their students the rigid art of singing but that may not be what you want. You might just want to learn how to sing so you can sound good at the next karaoke night in which case a vocal coach isn’t for you.

Strict singing lessons can actually have the effect of turning some people away from singing all together. Feeling like you are a young student again with a strict teacher can make the experience uncomfortable but many singing tutors simply dont know any better or how to get the best out of their students.

A lot of people turn to books, CDs or DVDs to teach them how to sing. Although these media do offer some assistance and are certainly better than reading a book on how to sing, the experience is usually over too quickly and doesn’t go into any great depth. So which way is best?

Even these learn how to sing materials often fall way short of what the student expects or wants. The majority of teaching aids on the market today are very stuffy and are focused on guiding people towards professional singing.

Most people just want to improve their natural voice. How bland it would be if we all sang with the same technique and style? If you look at some of the most charasmatic singers down the years (especially in the modern pop era) you will find that most of them have their own unique style which immediately identifies them. And thats what you should be looking for from yourself too.

But dont ever give up on your passion. If singing is something you’ve always done no matter how badly, you can get better. With the right training you can get up confidently infront of many people and amaze them with your wonderful, but unique singing style.
