Long time heartthrob, Patrick Swayze, passed away Monday, September 14th. The actor had been battling pancreatic cancer for the previous 20 months; however, his death was reportedly peaceful, with his family members surrounding him.

His previous 20 months had been spent working on various sets, such as Powder Blue and The Beast. The first is a dramatic film that is scheduled for release this year. The latter was an exclusive A&E television drama running in 2009 that was not renewed after its first season, partially due to Swayze’s inability to help promote the show due to his failing health.

During the filming of these television and movie dramas, and in between treatments for his life threatening illness, Swayze was also busy creating a memoir with his wife, Lisa Niemi. Swayze and Niemi were married in 1975 and the actor had repeatedly mentioned how lucky he was to have found her. Niemi, who, among other talents, is a licensed pilot, reportedly ensured that her husband made it to all of his treatments by flying him there herself.

Fans of the actor will surely be engaging themselves in Patrick Swayze trivia to reminisce about all of the unforgettable moments of Swayze’s life. For instance, his performance in the hit movie Dirty Dancing transformed his acting career. Swayze’s fancy footed rebel character, Johnny Castle, was the apple of nearly every female eye in the late 1980’s. However, the sex appeal continued with the help of Roadhouse, and Ghost – a film that finally gave him the opportunity to break through that tough exterior and show his fans that sensitive side.

Of course, any Patrick Swayze quiz will likely include a similar version to this question: “What year was Patrick Swayze voted as People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive”? The year was 1991. Some believe that Swayze’s ability to play Sam Wheat, in 1990’s Ghost, with so much emotion and sensitivity helped to catapult him into the hearts of any women who hadn’t already had their eyes on him.

The actor’s versatility continued in 1995 with the role of Vida, a drag queen, in To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Patrick Swayze trivia buffs will know remember that he was almost turned down for the role due simply to his status as a very masculine (and hetero) sex symbol. Yet, Swayze managed to transform himself enough to land the part and expand his ever growing repertoire.

Swayze’s bravery during his illness, his versatility as an actor, and his amazing abilities as a dancer will be fondly remembered by his fans the world over. Of course, his loving nature, his loyal friendship, and his heartwarming smile will be forever etched into the hearts of those friends and loved ones that he held dear.
