Men’s Fashion And The Use Of Leather Down Through The Centuries

Men have always had somewhat of a love affair with leather as a supplement (or even as the whole article) to their clothing. The use of leather as a clothing material, in fact, is probably nearly as old as humans themselves. It probably came into use in the ancient world and back then was mainly used to add to the bottoms of sandals or as wrist guards for archers and the like.

Leather making as a technology and an art began to really take off once people formed societies. Makers back then were able to turn out a variety of objects such as utilitarian belts and shoes but also more fashionable items that went on the head or elsewhere. Consider how long leather has been around the next time a new pair of leather brown boots are in the offing.

In the world of entertainment and the arts, leather as a clothing material is practically a given for an artist who wishes to make a statement. Certainly, the material has seen wide use in the world of hard rock and heavy metal, which has been the case for nearly 50 years now. Motorcycle riders are probably the largest single bloc of hard-core users of the material, and have enjoyed it for nearly 100 years.

Not only is this material good-looking but — for motorcycle riders — it serves a very utilitarian purpose in that it acts as an effective and very tough barrier against the road, should an unfortunate cyclist happened to dump his bike and go skating along the pavement. Even something as simple as a leather watch strap can sometimes serve a very useful purpose due to its ruggedness and durability.

And that’s probably where leather is most often seen, because it’s a rare man or woman who doesn’t have one or two watches that feature the material as a strap or band. Even a nice men’s sport watch can feature leather rather than some sort of rubberized material in a band. It will all depend, of course, on the purpose for which the watch is being worn. But leather looks good no matter the occasion.

There are a number of different kinds of leather, just as there are a number of different kinds of leather production technologies, some as old as the first societies. All will share similar characteristics, especially the leather itself, which comes from the skin of an animal. Today, it can be found in objects as diverse as baseball gloves and the seats of automobiles, as a matter of fact.

For a fact, there doesn’t seem to be an area of fashion or sport where leather has not made its mark. Whether it is for utilitarian and functional purposes or whether it is purely as a fashion statement, leather can be said to have a long and distinguished history going back to when people first clothed themselves in it. This is something that many people may not have even considered, as a matter of fact.
