Gibson Hummingbird True Vintage Acoustic Guitar
Gibson first manufactured the square shouldered Hummingbird in 1960. Next to the J-200 it was Gibson’s top of the line acoustic guitar. A stage performer will only benifit by adding the Gibson Hummingbird to her guitarsenal. It could be a real word. It’s easier to say than two words). This is why you see artists of various musical styles such as Jimmy Page, Marc Bolan, Keith Richards, Gram Parsons, John
McLaughlin, Sheryl Crow, and many others using the Hummingbird. Former singer song writer Carla Bruni, now the First Lady of France, was given a Gibson Hummingbird by Michelle Obama.
The Gibson Hummingbird has undergone design continued evolution since it’s inception. Besides the Mahogany that is normally used for the back and sides, maple and koa have been substituted as well. The gorgeous Cherry Sunburst has run the gauntlet to dark Tobacco Sunburst, to Natural, to the Vintage Heritage Cherry Sunburst on the new TV rendition and the darker Sunburst on the VOS. The sound is balanced across the scale making it a great instrument to accompany the voice. “Velvet” is the word that seems to describe the sound. It performs well at the gentle touch or at the harder hand of a rock artist.
The nitrocellulose finish on the Gibson True Vintage Hummingbird is the result of a time consuming process during which 9 coats are applied. A very thin layer of nitro allows the tone wood to breathe and age naturally. The first rate Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides are protected by the nitrocellulose finish.A 25-1/2 inch scale made of Madagascar Rosewood is sitting on the round Mahogany neck. Of special interest to the fingerstyle guitarist is the wider neck.
Couple that with the balanced velvety tone and this guitar is an excellent choice for the fingerstyle performer.
