Deciding to Use a Pick for Your Acoustic Guitar

There are few instruments as captivating as an acoustic guitar. Regardless of whether or not you may be familiar with musical instruments or have had experience with them, learning to play an acoustic guitar is easy for people of all ages. If you want to learn everything you need to get started, deciding to taking acoustic guitar lessons will help you do so. One point of interest you will likely learn from such lessons is the correct application of the pick.  “How,” you ask, “and when, should it be used?”

For many new guitarists, this is a question that is not easily answered. There are those guitarists who prefer to play with just their fingers, while others choose to use a pick, so how do you make your own decision? The decision is directly related to the type of guitarist you want to be. A pick may not always be the best choice, which is the case for most flamenco guitarists because a pick results in a sound that is unsuitable for that music type.

Playing music with a quicker tempo is most commonly done with a pick. Not using a pick really limits the style of music you’ll be playing. There are actually fewer melodies available for playing if you don’t choose to use a pick. Generally a pick is used when you are taking your first acoustic guitar lessons.

Music with a slow tempo can be strummed with your fingers. In a basic acoustic guitar lesson, the steps for selecting the best guitar pick will be thoroughly  outlined. If you do decide to use a pick, you need to choose a style and size. Guitar picks come in a variety of sizes and materials, such as tortex, plastic, and nylon.

The size of the pick affects the quality of the sound so the smaller the pick, the lighter the sound. Remember, if you want a lighter quality in your music, pick the appropriate sized pick. Of course, it really all boils down to the guitarist’s own preference. It depends on whether or not they plan to play fast songs or are looking for a more traditional sound.
