Carnival In Florianopolis
Carnival is celebrated all over South America and once a year normal life comes to a complete standstill in Brazil for the 4 to 5 days of celebration. Whereas Rio is famed the world over for its colourful and extravagant parade, there are many other destinations across the country that celebrate the nations cultural diversity. Already with a name as a party island, Florianopolis carnival is as vibrant as any other, with events taking place at the Sambadromo and many beaches.
In Florianopolis, the samba school parade, which passes through the city centre, is by far the main event. Nevertheless, being a region rich in Azorean and Brazilian customs, the island offers a whole host of alternative events away from traditional samba. With such importance placed on carnival festivities, the events are an integral part of Florianopolis nightlife.
On the island two types of carnival exist: the official and unofficial. Whilst being about fun and entertainment, the official event, for which pre-ordered tickets are required, is taken extremely seriously. Ticket information can be found in travel guides.
Local samba schools spend months preparing for the event, keeping themselves busy making costumes and practising dance routines to be performed in front of crowds of adoring fans and a team of judges. In contrast, many locals prefer to hold their own form of carnival by closing off the streets of the towns and villages and organising lengthy parties. These parties often spill into the night and the discos become swamped with costumed revellers.
Carnival is not all about the 4/5 days of main celebrations. In the lead up to the events bands and dance groups can be seen all across the island perfecting their routines. On occasions these rehearsals turn into impromptu parties. As the opening day draws closer the celebrations get larger and louder and beaches like Praia da Joaquina and Jurere Internacional become a hive of activity. Then, following a midnight firework display, the fun begins and floats and performers fill the streets, including an elaborate gay parade. Carnival time in Brazil is guaranteed entertainment, but arrive prepared as it is a 24-hour shindig.
